The Yalumba Octavius is matured in American oak 'octaves' of only 90 litres capacity. It is the only red wine in the world that is matured in such small barrels. The secret of the wine not becoming overpowered by the oak, is that the oak used is seasoned at Yalumba for eight years before the octaves are crafted. Yalumba is one of a select few wineries in the world who boast their own coopers practising the ancient craft of barrel making.
Very deep crimson colour with deep crimson hue. Superb nose of violets, liquorice, spice and mocca. The palate structure is very refined, with flavours of mocca, liquorice, blackpepper and spice emerging. Excellent length and depth. Velvet smooth tannin structure followed by a very long mocca, spice, blackpepper, aftertaste.
Cellar 3-4 years (2006-2007)
Alc/Vol: 14.5%
RATING:96/100
VALUE:XXXX/5

Robert Parkers Review:
Made from 100% Shiraz, the massive, full-bodied 1999 Octavius continues the succession of profound efforts from Yalumba. Tremendously rich, intense, and multidimensional, it offers up notes of blackberries, sweet smoke, and melted asphalt. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025.
