1999 Penny's Hill Shiraz

McLaren Vale, South Australia, AUSTRALIA
$26. 99
Bottle
$323.88 Dozen
Closure: Cork

We tried this wine when it was first released and felt that it was not up to the exceptionally high standard of the 1998, and to be fair the wine had only been recently bottled. The 1999 Penny’s Hill came up again in our tasting and whilst the colour let the wine down from achieving a very high score, the palate has actually settled down and filled out. This wine is not a long keeping Penny’s Hill, and as such needs to be drunk sooner rather than later. In recognition of the fact, Penny’s Hill owner Tony Parkinson has adjusted the price which now represents extremely good value.
Very deep crimson colour, with mauve brick red edges. Aroma of toasted oak, spice and liquorice, followed by ripe plum and a hint of earth. The palate is this wine’s virtue. Mouthfilling peppery spice and blackberry plum flavours followed by toasted oak and liquorice end palate flavours. Fine grained tannins, excellent balance, followed by very long toasted oak, sweet plum and liquorice aftertaste. Cellar 3-4 years. (2004 - 2005)
