- Closure: Cork
This is a relatively expensive Riesling, selling at around $30 a bottle, so a lot is expected from it. In recent years, Penfolds have made a huge effort in lifting the profile and quality of their white wine production, the high point being Yattana. This wine does not disappoint. Bright pale straw colour. Superb nose of honey, lime and green apples, a joy to sniff and wonderful penetrating aromatics. Mouthfilling, concentrated palate flavours. Toasted lime and green apple flavours fill the mouth. Excellent length, crisp acid finish and very long honey, lime and citrus aftertaste. Cellar 3-4 years.
Southcorp Wines notes: From one of the best vineyard sites for Riesling in Australia comes this inaugural vintage Penfolds Reserve Riesling. This wine was sourced entirely from the Eden Valley district in South Australia, a region justifiably famous for its Rieslings. Penfolds Reserve Riesling has evolved as a result of a combination of vineyard selection, definitive winemaking techniques and the potential of this variety to age gracefully for many years. The Eden Valley experienced cool conditions during the growing season and the final stages of ripening which were perfect conditions for growing premium Riesling grapes. Light pale green colour with brilliant hues. The nose displays excellent citrus and green apple characters typical of cool climate Eden Valley fruit. Complemented by a lifted floral rose petal aroma, the varietal Riesling is defined superbly. The palate is medium bodied with intense yet delicate fine Riesling fruit flavours. Abundant citrus and green apple characters with a soft, clean and crisp finish. This wine is enjoyable drinking now but will gain complex honeyed, toasty characters that exemplify fine aged Rieslings when cellared for many years. 12.7% alcohol volume.
