The back label of this wine quotes Hugh Johnston as saying "Sauvignon Blanc is a weed that ought to be eradicated" Now, were not sure of the exact context of those words, but we would certainly take a completely opposite view. Sauvignon Blanc is without any doubt one of the Classic White grapes and is capable of producing a variety of styles from grassy, herbaceous, to the rich luscious honey filled wines of Sauternes. The great wines of Sancerre, Sauternes, New Zealand and Graves owe their basis either entirely or in part to Sauvignon Blanc. However, having tasted the d'Arenberg Sauvignon Blanc, one might begin to assume that Johnson was referring to d'Arenbergs efforts of making wine from this variety.Bright watery colour. Delicate nose with aromas of tropical fruit and ripe gooseberries followed by a hint of confectionary. The palate flavours are straightforward displaying simple tropical fruit and gooseberry flavours followed by soft acidity. A commercial wine and a disappointment to the range of otherwise top quality wines. Drink up.
