Cullen's Cabernet Merlot is an Australian wine icon, yet the chardonnay fails to reach the same dizzy heights. Made from low yielding, twenty four year old vines and fermented using wild yeasts, the wine does not match the superb length achieved by the likes of Giaconda or Leeuwin, and that may simply come down to the question of terroir. Nevertheless, this is still a very credible wine.Bright pale straw colour with aromas of fig, melon, a subtle hint of yeast lees and butterscotch. The palate has the weight and concentration of flavour that comes from old low yielding vines. Fig, melon, toasted oak, cashews and biscuit dominate the palate. Perfect balance, with a clean crisp acid finish and a very long aftertaste of biscuit, almond, fig and toast. Cellar 3 - 5 years.
