1999 was a warm, modestly yielding vintage that later in the season produced ideal conditions for development of Botrytis cinerea.
Each batch was crushed into tank presses where it remained in contact with skins for 24 hours to allow the raisined berries to leach their concentrated sugars into the must. After pressing, each batch was fermented slowly over two months in small stainless steel tanks until achieving the desired balance of sugar and acidity. The wine was then racked to old French oak barrels for an eight month maturation on yeast lees prior to being bottled in March 2000. The final wine has an alcohol of 11.9%, titratable acidity of 9.1g/l and a residual sugar of 150g/l.
Grapes were sourced from the Godfrey Road vineyard in the Fairhall subregion of the Wairau Valley. Light gold and fragrant with the scents of honeyed orange blossom and ripe apricot, the 1999 Cloudy Bay Late Harvest Riesling is a sensual reminder of the heady last days of summer. The wine has a luxurious mouthfeel and a rich sweetness counterbalanced by crisp acidity. The finish is delicately fruity, redolent of ripe lime and orange.
