Wines like this will no doubt spark ethical debates about what is right and what is wrong with blending Chardonnay with Shiraz and Cabernet. The proponents will argue that it's been happening for a long time in the Rhone Valley, where Voigner is blended with Shiraz - a permitted use. The Voignier being an aromatic white grape variety which gives the Shiraz an excellent lift and adds palate complexity. The purists will be up in arms - why bastardise 3 great grape varieties? On the other hand if the blending of the 3 contributes to a new harmonious whole, then we consider it to be a worth while experience. In this particular case it's a question of whether flavours of peach and plums are compatible or in fact clash.Bright crimson mauve colour, medium weight, displaying lifted inky cherry, spice nose with a liquorice end note and just a touch of tar. The palate is where the flavours begin to twist and turn and do not work. The Chardonnay contributes its peachy flavour component which does not rest well with the fine, but firmish tannins. Slightly dilute palate flavours with inky peach, spice and liquorice aftertaste a real stewed fruit expression. Try it by all means. Drink up!
