The 1999 Balnaves Shiraz is an excellent result, and reflects the importance of viticultural management in order to produce consistently impressive wines. Whilst the 1999 vintage generally favoured Shiraz as the more successful varietal in 1999, not all Coonawarra makers produced great wines – which gets back to the core, of managing vineyards according to seasonal conditions. The wine was matured in a combination of American and French oak for 22 months. Opaque crimson colour. Perfumed nose, very impressive with aroma of vanilla, spice, blackcurrant and dark chocolate. The wine displays palate weight and persistence, with flavours of chocolate, spice, confectionery and black pepper supported by a fine grained tannin structure. Perfect balance, followed by long vanilla, confectionery and blackcurrant aftertaste. Cellar 4-5 years.
