1998 Woodstock Cabernet Sauvignon

McLaren Vale, South Australia, AUSTRALIA
$17. 99

$215.88 Dozen
Closure: Cork

This wine differs from the other McLaren Vale reds in that it is lower in alcohol than many of its peers. These days 14% or close to it, seems to be the norm, where the Woodstock Cabernet is at 12.5%. The difference in having a lower alcohol level, means that the flavours are not perceived as being as sweet, and the tannins generally being a touch drier. The danger of low alcohol with cabernets is the possibility for the emergence of the dreaded methoxypyrazine or vegetal aromas and flavours. Fortunately the Woodstock does not suffer from that.Opaque, crimson, black colour. Aroma of earth, leather and truffle with notes of spice, liquorice and blackcurrant in the background. On the palate, flavour of mint, blackcurrant, earth and spice- and without the rich mouthfeel usually associated with McLaren Vale reds. Fine grained tannins, perfect balance, followed by long blackcurrant, spice, earth and leather aftertaste. Cellar 3-4 years.

RATING: 87/100

VALUE: XXXX/5

Retasted: November 2000

Opaque crimson colour with mauve overtones. The nose is very impressive with overtones of earth, spice, cedar, violet and blackcurrant. On the palate earth and plum flavours, with blackcurrant and leather on the back palate. Fine grained tannins. An elegant wine, but without concentration. Cellar 3-4 years.
