Notes sourced from Southern Cross Wines.

Shiraz is Australia's favourite red variety, and for 30 years the Rothbury Estate has had a fine reputation as a maker of premium Shiraz. The Mudgee region is beginning to gain a reputation as one capable of creating richly flavoured red wines of distinctive character.Fruit for this wine was sourced from The Rothbury Estate's own vineyards at Mudgee on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range in NSW. In 1998 Mudgee offered an excellent climate for the ripening of Shiraz with a warm summer and dry conditions throughout vintage. The wine began fermentation in tank at warm temperatures for up to 6 days before being pressed and transferred into new and seasoned American and French oak barriques. The wine completed its fermentation in these vessels, gaining complexity and integration, and was matured in the same barrels for a further 12 months before bottling.Tasting Notes: A youthful deep red colour introduces the 1998 Rothbury Estate Mudgee Shiraz, which offers aromas of dark plums, blackberries, peppery sweet fruit and earthy nuances, with a hint of supporting oak. On the palate the wine is medium to full-bodied with rich varietal Shiraz flavours, fine velvety tannins and a soft finish. Cellar 3-5 years. 13.2% alcohol volume.
