Mastrojanni was founded in 1976 and has 44 acres of wines under cultivation. The vineyard is situated on the South East slopes of the town Montalcino. Apparently the vineyard receives the benefits of being located near the volcano of Mount Amiata. The wine is produced from Sangiovese Grosso. The wines are matured for 2 years in oak and spend another 2 years in bottle prior to release.
Brick red colour with brick red tawny hue, showing signs of bottle age. The nose is unexpected with an aroma that draws parallels with Bordeaux. The nose delivers an unexpected intensity of leather, cedar, spice, confectionary, truffle and white pepper. The palate is refined and whilst it delivers tertiary flavours, it also delivers a sense of style and refinement not evident in less expensive examples of the variety. Flavours of leather, cedar and spice, followed by a hint of truffle and confectionary. Super fine tannins, which are perfectly balanced to the fruit – again the parallel to fine Bordeaux can be drawn. Very long aftertaste of spice, leather and truffle with a hint of cedar and earth.
