Chateau Belgrave was classified as a 5th Growth in the 1855 Classification. Since its acquisition by GFA in 1979 the Estate has undergone a complete overhaul in both winery and vineyards. A cellar capable of maturing 1500 barrels was built in 1980, and 10 hectares of vineyard have been replaced. Situated on deep gravel soils over limestone. The vineyard consists of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The wine is matured in barriques for between 15 and 18 months in oak of which 50% is new.Very deep crimson colour with mauve edges. The deepest coloured wine in the line up. Slightly perfumed nose with aromas of earth, violets, truffle and cedar. Excellent palate weight and depth of flavour with strong blackcurrant flavours overriding spice and cedar. Fine grained tannins, excellent balance, followed by long spice, liquorice and blackcurrant aftertaste. Cellar 5-8 years.
