Bunnahabhain's low-to-unpeated style has gained a reputation as the most gentle single malt produced on an island otherwise famed for its massively flavoured whiskies. This indie edition was distilled in 1997 and bottled in 2018 after 20 years in a hogshead. The price / quality ratio is very tempting given what you'd be paying for distillery releases of similar pedigree.

Tasting note: [Cask #5411 tasted] Bright gold. Unfolds in stages, being initially mezcal-like before turning sweetly sooty. Second pass finds scents of brine, fruit’n’nut chocolate...bircher muesli? Turns full circle after 10 minutes of swirling and air contact as the peat retreats and orchard fruits come to the fore. Overall, a robust and quite heavily peated Bunnah’, with very good concentration and an attractive salted caramel chocolate note towards the finish. Give it time to show its best. 50.4% Alc./Vol.
