The Menzies Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon was named after the late Liberal Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies, and the 1987 Cabernet was the first wine to be released under that label. The 1996 vintage is considered to be very good with fruit achieving optimum ripeness and flavour development. The wine has been matured in 33% new French hogsheads with the balance in one or two year old barrels for 23 months. Medium bodied deep crimson colour. The nose displays some perfumed aromas followed by ripe plum, spice and chocolate. The palate is generous with full body and pronounced flavour of plum, chocolate and spice. Excellent length, perfect balance, fine grained soft tannins, followed by a long plum chocolate spice aftertaste. Cellar 5-8 years.
