In a recent interview for Wine Wise magazine, winemaker Richard Richardson made the following comments on style:"I don't hold by the dictum that great wine is made in the vineyard. The French word elevage sums it up. The wine is reared in the winery. Quality is only definable within style.""Wine is an expression of personality. I like to go for it. I throw caution to the wind."So with these philosophical statements behind the wine, it is indeed an interesting experience to see just how these ideas are translated into reality. The colour is a little disappointing - but colour is not everything, particularly in pinot. The nose is a delight - superb sweet ripe strawberry with just a hint of game and spice - almost perfumed. The palate reflects the strawberry spice and game flavours - excellent length and depth - the tannins are a little firm, but will soften over the next couple of years. Long aftertaste.
