The 1995 Cullen Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot is one of the all time greats rated a full 5 out of 5 by Vanya Cullen. Since 1974 the only vintages to receive such an accolade were 1984, 1991 Reserve and 1994 Reserve. From the 1995 vintage there will be no further reserves - all efforts are being placed to make an extraordinary Cabernet Merlot. Vanya Cullen writes "The 1995 Cabernet Sauvignon is a great wine, which undoubtedly matches the standards set by the Reserve wines of previous vintages."The dry weather conditions extended into spring and summer resulting in crop levels being reduced to around two tonnes per acre. This low yield, coupled with full ripeness and a final alcohol reading of 13.5% has produced concentrated fruit flavours. The 1995 Cabernet Merlot is made up of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc. The wine was matured in French oak for 17 months with 30% being new. The density of the centre of the wine and the brillant mauve crimson edge indicate that a wine of exceptional quality is about to follow. The nose verifies the expectation and heralds an Australian triumph - an international red to rival the First Growths of Bordeaux - and comparatively at a very modest price indeed! Aromas of violets, confectionary, cedar, blackcurrant, truffle and spice emerge to display an immensely concentrated red of monumental stature. On the palate there are no disappointments - except when one realises that the wine is being drunk far too early. This is a pedigree keeper - 10-20 years without an effort. Mouthfilling flavours of mulberry, liquorice and blackcurrant. A wine of great depth and length. Perfect balance - fine, firm tannin structure with very long blackcurrant/liquorice aftertaste. An absolute must for the collector and investor! Stocks are extremely limited.
