1994 was one of those vintages that clearly demonstrated that virtually anywhere in Australia, where you restrict the yields and increase the concentration of flavour - great wine will follow. The 1994 Yalumba Family Reserve Shiraz is a superb, complex shiraz, which carefully uses charred American oak as its backbone, but not its structure. Deep crimson colour with mauve edges. The nose is uplifted, immediate and very appealing.Blackberry aromas, spice and charry vanillin oak create a complex beginning. The palate is full bodied, loaded with ripe blackberry flavours with hints of liquorice and ripe plum and blackpeppers, enhanced by the presence of a smoky oak backbone. Firm, fine tannin structure and long spiced charred oak and plum aftertaste. Excellent - cellar 5-8 years.
