Tasting Notes sourced from Southcorp Wines

As with the Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon the Michael Shiraz is only made in years when the quality of fruit available is outstanding. The wine takes its name from the famous 1955 vintage Shiraz made by David Wynn, which was labelled "Michael Hermitage" and recognised as one of Coonawarra's greatest wines. This wine was matured in new American oak for 19 months. Great colour, showing a tremendous depth of red and purple hues. The nose displays mulberry and pepper-like berry fruit with dark chocolate, peppermint and coffee bean aromas in the background. This is rich, ripe Shiraz at its best. The palate displays sweet, spicy fruit with black pepper characters typical of cool climate Shiraz and charry oak. Excellent depth of flavour. Cellar 10 years. Winner of 3 Gold Medals. 13.0% Alcohol Volume.

Retasted: July 2002
A brooding giant that needs many more years to evolve. Totally opaque, with deep crimson hue. Aroma of violets, liquorice and dark chocolate. Mouthfilling, concentrated palate with very powerful yet unintegrated flavours of blackpepper, spice, cedar, plum and stewed fruit. The palate length is yet to evolve, and is much shorter than expected – somewhat of a clunk of fruit at this stage. Fine grained tannins, very tight, still followed by very long aftertaste of plum and stewed fruit.
