The fruit for this wine was sourced entirely from the orginal 28 hectare Lawson's Padthaway vineyard which was first planted in 1968. From a geologists point of view the area is very interesting as the vineyard is situated on the shoreline of an ancient seabed. The soils are deep free draining sands which cause some stress in the vines, whilst ensuring that yields are kept quite low. The wine was matured in new American oak hogsheads for 18 months and has to date won 6 gold medals and one trophy. This is an outstanding wine. Magnificent crimson purple colour. Superb ripe plum chocolate spice nose, almost perfumed. The palate is mouthfilling, loaded with flavour and complexity. Liquorice, spice, vanillin oak, plum and chocolate abound enhanced by some toasted oak background notes. Excellent length, outstanding balance and long chocolate, spice, vanilla and liquorice aftertaste. Cellar a further 8-10 years.
