1994 Leconfield Cabernets

Vintage by vintage Ralph Fowler is consolidating his position asone of Australia's top winemakers. Just a decade ago Leconfieldwines were competent but never great. Even in great yearsindifferent wines were produced. Today their wines are bestdescribed in superlatives. The 1994 is great wine with a greatfuture. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Francand Petit Verdot, the wine has a depth of flavour that ismissing in the 1993. The Merlot is less dominant and the tanninlevels finer and firmer.Opaque crimson mauve colour. Superb nose - mulberries,blackcurrants, dark chocolate with cedar background. The palateis beautifully layered with the flavours of the nose beingextended and a hint of almond enhancing the back palate.Excellent length and balance. The tannin levels are firm andfine, but well supported by the rich plummy fruit on the palateand aftertaste. Cellar 10-15 years.\Z
