Riesling is the classic grape variety of Germany and one of the earliest varieties brought to South Australia. Cyril Henschke developed the Henschke reputation for riesling wines as early as the 1950s from the vineyard areas of Eden Valley and Springton. These dry, food-oriented wines were clean and crisp with the ability to age into delicious marmalade on toast flavours, due to the cool climate of the Eden Valley region. This region provides excellent ripening conditions for the riesling grape. Eden Valley riesling has a unique track record of exceptional ageing potential. The 1992 vintage was preceded by a late wet winter, although the yearly rainfall was 50mm below average. The mild spring was ideal for flowering and encouraged excellent berry set. A long dry cool summer with the coolest January on record delayed the harvest. Warm dry humid conditions during February led to a high incidence of powdery mildew, in particular on chardonnay. Despite the predictions being just above average, actual yields were only 10% less than the big 1990 vintage. The riesling grapes were handpicked at 12.5' Be to achieve maximum fruit flavours.Riesling shows an extra dimension with bottle age. Bright gold with green hints. Ripe lime citrus marmalade on toast with mint/menthol hints of developed riesling. Intense palate with crisp acidity, finishing with excellent balance and length. Very good vintage, drink now.
