Bladnoch is Scotland’s most southerly distillery, nestled on the green banks of the River Bladnoch, from which it takes its name. Located in this beautifully remote area, the distillery has been producing since 1817. It employs mainly unpeated malt from independent maltsters, though very occasionally will use medium peated malt (18ppm phenols), usually once a year.

This release from reputable independent bottler, 'Cadenhead's' was distilled in 1990 and bottled in July 2010. Matured in a Bourbon hogshead with only 281 bottles produced.

Tasting note: Very pale gold colour. The aroma has a floral delicacy that’s initially grassy but also slightly sulphury in the soapy spectrum. Aeration reveals an intense though elusive sweet spot; you can catch nuances of something resembling ripe pear and oatmeal biscuit, but aromatically the nose remains subdued to light at best. As you’d anticipate at cask strength, this is heavy weight by Lowland standards, however the focus is towards intense, sweet spices that compete with, rather than compliment, the more subtle notes of stewed pear and sweet cereals. Slightly hot back palate quickly settles. Brief vanilla and oatmeal aftertaste. Fine dusty tannins. Spices persist. A faint sulphury note reemerges late. Somewhat awkward whisky yet interesting nonetheless. 52.3% Alc/Vol.
