French Wine Regions...
Loire Valley
The Loire Valley, famous for its mild climate and magnificent Renaissance Chateaux, produces fruity, delicate wines with the luminous clarity of the local skies. Nowadays most of the production is spread over four large AOC regions: the Pays Nantais (Muscadet: 600,000 hl), Anjou and Saumur (800,000 hl), Touraine (500,000 hl), and the Sancerre and Pouilly region (130,000 hl), all on choice sites bordering the 'Royal' river and its tributaries.Up to the last century, the Loire and its tributaries formed a major navigable waterway. The sixteenth century was a golden age for the region, both in the arts and in political and economic life, although all this came to a brutal end
with the Wars of Religion.
The Loire vineyard sites are all on the eastern face of hills, which draw down excessive moisture from the prevailing Atlantic winds, giving the valley a rainfall of less than 600 mm per year and a mild, sunny climate. The Anjou wine region, sheltered by the Mauges hills, and the Sancerre region, sheltered by hills of around 400 m, are perfect examples of this configuration. Most of the good wine areas are on tributaries where Atlantic influences can cut across.
Loire wines are principally whites or clarets, light-coloured wines produced by the brief maceration of fruity red grape varieties. There are four categories of classic grape varieties. Chenin Noir, or Pineau d'Aunis, is the oldest Loire variety; it makes a delicious, characterful rosè but is uncommon now in Anjou or Touraine. It is agreed that selection from Chenin Noir produced the white variety known as Pineau de Ia Loire or Chenin Blanc, the principal grape of Anjou and Touraine. This is a grape that ripens late, in the first cold autumn weather, and develops an inimitable flavour when grown on the exceptional sites of Coteaux du Layon, and at Sauvennieres, Vouvray
and around Saumur. Although Chenin Blanc is the predominant variety in these areas, it is dwindling elsewhere because of cultivation problems.
Sauvignon also comes into the first category of grapes grown in the Loire, although there is some argument about whether it originated there or in the Bordeaux region. Recent research has shown that Chenin and Sauvignon are in fact related. This strongly aromatic white grape was fairly widespread throughout the Loire valley and the southwest as late as the seventeenth century, although its use subsequently declined. Now it is popular and is the only variety permitted for the white wine of Sancerre, Pouilly-Fume, Quincy, Menetou-Salon and Reuilly. It is also predominant in Touraine.
The Loire Today
The controls of the AOC system have ensured the progress in quality of the Loire wines. Between 1955 and 1985 the AOC area of Touraine has doubled and that of Sancerre has more than tripled. The Anjou wine region has remained static but, with the decline in sweet white wine, has undergone major replanting. The area of Chenin has decreased from 9,000 to 4,500 hectares in thirty years, replaced mainly by Cabernet Franc. Muscadet continues to gain in reputation and is one of the Loire Valley's great successes. Overall, during this period, the Loire appellation vineyards have increased from 29,000 to 40,000 hectares, and their wines now makeup 12 per cent of French AOC wines. Most of these are
white wines, particularly important in the export market and the region is now fourth in importance in the export trade.

2006 Kalleske Pirathon Shiraz Region: Barossa Valley, South Australia Rating: 95 Value:

"an up and coming superstar estate that merits considerable attention"
- Robert Parker
Outstanding black crimson purple colour, totally opaque with good cling to the wall. Perfumed top note blackberry, liquorice, confectionary and violets, showing strong varietal character. The structure is more refined than that of the '05 vintage. Flavours of vanilla, black pepper and blackberry are supported by fine dryish tannins over a mocha background. Aftertaste of vanilla and black pepper. Cellar 4-5 years (2012-2013) Alc/Vol: 15%

REGION: McLaren Vale, South Australia
Winemaker Chester Osborn has a clear winemaking philosophy that's expressed in the Dead Arm Shiraz: '
I aim to make loudest, most flowery fragrant and most fruit-flavoured wines that have great palate texture and are without excess oak. I look for tannins that are long, lively, gritty and youthful with fragrant fruit-mineral notes... One other focus is to make a wine that is not going to go too earthy or bitumen - tarry with age. Some producers make wines that have oodles of fruit; they're ripe, rich and gutsy, but in a few years these wines may show inherent problems from their production. That is fat, blousy, and chocolate and tar with short palate life. This is also the opposite of what we aim to produce.'
A magnificent Dead Arm!
Opaque black purple colour with black purple hue, showing excellent cling to the glass. Superb nose of violets, confectionary, blackberry, vanilla and cedar followed by end notes of liquorice and toasted oak. Mouthfilling palate, displaying classic McLaren Vale 'joosy' character. Flavours of liquorice, black pepper and spice supported by fine grained tannins. Excellent balance. Exceptionally long aftertaste of vanilla, confectionary, spice and black pepper.
Cellar 5-8 years (2013-2016)

It's hard to imagine how a construction worker and an accountant came to develop what Robert Parker describes as "...the finest negotiant operation south of the equator." The partnership was formed in 1997 with the clear objective of producing top Shiraz from the best Shiraz regions in Australia. The pair are not afraid to think outside the square and most of all they say, "we want to put some fun back into wine." A superb wine!
The wine displays a saturate of colour, black purple with black purple hue and paint like cling. Top note of liquorice allsorts, ripe plum, blackberry and vanilla. Very spicy palate - mouthfilling black pepper, ripe plum and joosy blackberry flavours. Fine grained tannins. Perfect balance. Very long black pepper aftertaste.

The Jesuits, Society of Jesus, having migrated from Austria in 1848, established the Sevenhill winery in 1851 in the Clare Valley. The Jesuits initially focussed on the production of Altar wine and hoped that the Clare Valley would become the centre of Catholicism for the north. Even today, 30% of wine produced at Sevenhill is used for Altar wine.
Opaque black crimson colour with black crimson hue. Top note of cedar, followed by spice and cassis - violet end note. The palate flavours are explosive - very distinct black pepper overlaid with blackcurrant and cedar. Dark chocolate and mocha back palate. Fine grained dryish tannins - chalky. Very long spicy aftertaste.

The 2005 vintage in the Loire Valley has been rated 10/10 with moderate, dry weather ensuring the grapes acidity remained balanced whilst developing excellent aromatics. The wine was kept on lees for 15-24 months after which time, it was riddled and disgorged. No dosage was added. French Sophistication At An Everyday Price!
The mousse is a fine pale cream colour with good persistence. Fine persistent bead - followed by the appearance of a straw coloured base wine. The blend of Chardonnay with Chenin Blanc works brilliantly with aroma of confectionary, yeast lees, baked apple showing good complexity with honey end note. The palate is very creamy, this is the creamiest Bouvet that we've seen in recent years. Clean acid finish. Aftertaste of sherbet, confectionary, quince and baked apple.

A grape variety hailing from the coastal region of Galicia in the north western corner of Spain, Albariño has become so popular there that it accounts for the majority of white varietal plantings and is considered by many to be the country's premier white (and almost certainly its most expensive).
In Galicia the variety enjoys warm days, cold nights and the maritime influence of the nearby Atlantic, (perfect for retaining the natural acidity of the variety) very similar to McLaren Vale.
Not surprisingly, Gemtree have managed to produce an excellent example of full bodied Albariño. Bright pale straw colour with water like hue, showing its youth. Top note of tropical fruit, followed by a hint of pear, subtle cantaloupe and ripe apple. Full bodied palate - with flavours of apple, pear and cantaloupe. Clean finish. Aftertaste of apple, pear, cantaloupe and tropical fruit.
