Originally wine was stored in barrels purely because they were robust and manageable storage vessels. Nowadays, it's recognised that many wines are uniquely enhanced by exposure to oak. So much so that the oak barrel is generally considered the most important element of many wines and spirits next to the source of the raw liquid itself.
