2008 Schild Estate Wines Barossa Shiraz

Great Bang for your Buck

RATING:  95   VALUE:
REGION:
Buy Online Barossa Valley, South Australia

The Schild name has a long history in the Barossa, dating back to 1952 when Ben Schild purchased the Three Springs Farm property in Rowland Flat and settled with his family. This wine first came to prominence when US magazine 'The Wine Spectator' scored the 2004 vintage 96 points which was unprecedented and a remarkable achievement for a wine from anywhere in the world at such a miserly price point. Needless to say the wine sold out like hotcakes in a matter of hours. The just released 2008 vintage comes very close to matching that effort.

A superb example of a rich, voluptuously textured Barossa Shiraz that delivers phenomenal value for money.

Opaque black crimson colour with deep dark red hue. Lifted aromas of super ripe blackberry and dark plum followed by some dark chocolate and confectionary notes. Opulent and rich with a plush fleshy texture the palate delivers mouthfilling flavours of ripe dark plum, blackberry, chocolate bullets and confectionary followed by some spice. Velvet smooth tannins with long aftertaste of dark plum, dark chocolate, liquorice and spice.

The Johann Georg Shiraz is Kalleske's flagship wine and is sourced from the oldest vineyard on the Kalleske farm, planted in 1875, producing very low yields (around 1 tonne per acre) from gnarly, dry grown vines.
Spectacular colour - a super saturate of black purple with a black heart and very deep black crimson hue showing superb glass cling. Perfumed aromas with lifted top notes of violets and blackberry followed by some dark plum, liquorice and confectionary. The palate delivers an explosive flavour experience framed by perfectly integrated silky smooth tannins. Blackberry, liquorice and blackpepper flavours fully encompass the palate and are followed by some vanilla and confectionary. Exceptionally long aftertaste of liquorice, blackberry, blackpepper and confectionary. An outstanding old vine Barossa Shiraz.

Famous as one of Speyside's biggest, most masculine whiskies and one of Scotland's most richly Sherry-influenced expressions, Glenfarlcas 15 will have lovers of traditional Macallan bottlings reminiscing. This whisky has been matured in 60% x-Sherry casks, with the remainder x-Bourbon, but with a difference. The latter barrels are shaved back in order to minimise their flavour input, putting the focus almost completely on the Sherry. Jim Murray describes Glenfarclas 15 as one of Scotland's most sublime malts with a rating of 95 points, amongst the highest he awards (see his review below). Keep in mind that the cost of Sherry casks is sky rocketing. Expect to be paying much, much more for whiskies like this in the years to come. Recall the 18 year Old Sherry Wood Macallan of times gone by (currently fetching around $300/bottle Australian - if you can find it) and you begin to get some perspective of the value on offer here. Our advice is to stock up! Stocks are limited at this price.
Note: Our rating for this whisky was from a sample bottle that had been opened for some time. We would anticipate a fresh bottle to be even better.

Other Reviews...Nose: 23
Such is the intensity if the fruit and sugar-rich barley, there is an element of medium ester Jamaican pot still rum to this, a feeling intensified by an orangey-oak influence that seems greater than 15 years. The top shelf sherry, though, is of a classical type rarely found these days, though common 30 years ago; Taste: 24 - Succulent and stupendous. barley sugar shows first, then a sherry input that borders on intense but dissapates as the spicy oak digs in; Finish: 24 - long, chewy, a tad oily and fades with a wonderful coffee- vanilla combination and a late surge of something bourbony; Balance: 24 - Eureka! The 15yo back to how i can remember it in the past. Some of you may have been scared away by some less than impressive recent bottlings. its safe to come back because now it has been returned to its position as one of Scotlands most sublime malts. The quality of the sherry is astonishing; its interaction with the barley is a wonderous joy. Go find and get...46%
