2011 Ad Hoc Hen & Chicken Chardonnay Seal Type Hot Item Sold Out
Pemberton, Western Australia, AUSTRALIA
RATING: 95 VALUE: CELLAR: Drink Now - 3 years (2012 - 2015) ALC/VOL: 13.00% TASTED: 3 Sep 2012
Hen & Chicken' is a disorder that's been linked to mineral deficiency. In wine-growing parlance, a chicken is a small, stunted berry, while a hen is a normal berry, one that will grow to luscious maturity and provide a burst of full-flavoured juice when it's squeezed. Evidently, winemaker Larry Cherubino, has spent some time on the sorting table for this wine! Aged in a combination of new and two year old French oak for a period of 8 months with 80% malolactic fermentation.

Brilliant pale straw colour with greenish tinge around the edges and watery hue. The nose displays lifted ripe white peach top notes followed by some cashew, nougat, light toast and spice. Medium to full bodied the palate possesses a generous almost creamy like flavour profile of white peach, cashew, nougat and spice. Clean finish with long white peach, nougat and spicy cashew aftertaste.
Drink over the next 2-3 years.

2011 Alois Lageder Pinot Grigio Seal Type Hot Item Sold Out
Dolomiti, ITALY
RATING: 94 VALUE: CELLAR: Drink Now - 2 years (2013 - 2015) ALC/VOL: 12.50% TASTED: 12 Apr 2013
Alois Lageder produce Alto Adige inspired wines with fruit from their own biodynamically farmed vineyards, and from quality-conscious growers. Following a centuries old local practice called “honest purchase,” growers are paid for their grapes only after the wines are made and marketed. Thus they too share in the wines commercial success. The principle remains an important instrument of quality control.

Brilliant pale straw colour with watery hue. The nose displays aromas of pear, apple and citrus followed by a faint hint of spicy musk. The palate is texturally quite full for Pinot Grigio with mouthfilling flavours of ripe pear and apple followed by some citrus, hints of nut and a very spicy, dry finish. Spicy aftertaste of pear, apple and dried nut.

2010 Ashbrook Estate Chardonnay Seal Type Hot Item Sold Out
Margaret River, Western Australia, AUSTRALIA
RATING: 96 VALUE: CELLAR: Drink Now - 4 years (2012 - 2016) ALC/VOL: 14.00% TASTED: 24 Apr 2012

If you can get past the folksy labelling, this is frequently one of the district's top buys in Chardonnay.

Ashbrook Estate is one of Margaret River's earlier ventures yet it is surprising how many consumers remain ignorant of this bargain producer (Halliday considers it one of Australia's top wineries). Established by the Devitt family in 1975, Ashbrook produced its first commercial wine in 1979. Only grapes handpicked and grown on the Estate are used. This superb, mouthfilling Chardonnay has its focus largely on rich, primary fruit flavours. It was 50% fermented and matured in brand new French oak barriques for 8 months.

Brilliant straw colour with a slight tinge of green around the edges and pale straw hue. The nose displays excellent intensity with lifted aromas of white peach, tropical fruit, honeycomb and nougat with a light overlay of spicy oak. Rich and concentrated the palate delivers an explosive flavour profile of white peach, nectarine and tropical fruits followed by some honeycomb and spicy oak. Almost creamy like texture supported by a good acid structure. Very long white peach, tropical fruits, honeycomb and spicy oak aftertaste.

Light to medium weight the palate possesses good richness with flavours of ripe dark cherry, plum, earthy cedar and spice. Good power wave with silky tannins. Supple mouthfeel. Long ripe dark cherry, plum, gamey cedar and spice aftertaste.

Other Reviews….
Medium depth red-purple; not filtered; 100% from the Bonython Vineyard planted in 1997; spice, dark cherry and some forest aromas lead into a light-bodied but well-balanced and surprisingly long palate. The move to screwcap is to be applauded, particularly for wines such as these Barratt Pinot Noirs that rely so much on elegance. Drink by 2016.
