This is a rather old fashioned style made from fruit grown in Echuca, Swan Hill, Geelong and King Valley. Deep crimson mauve colour with brick red overtones. Old fashioned, earthy, leather, farmyard nose with blackcurrant fruit remaining subdued in the background. On the palate the farmyard character is too pronounced and together with the leather like flavours totally overpower the plum and fruit. Fine grained soft tannins, followed by very strong farmyard, liquorice and leather aftertaste. Cellar 2-3 years.Retasted The fruit for this wine was sourced from different Victorian vineyards. The Cabernet Sauvignon components from King Valley, Swan Valley and Eucha, whilst the Merlot comes from Mt Duneed near Geelong and Swan Hill. A very surprising style and not the sort that we would have expected from John Ellis. It's very much an 'old fashioned' kind of wine, and an old fashioned kind of guy, John Ellis ain't! Medium body, crimson mauve colour. Aroma of mint, earth and farmyard with old leather dominant. On the palate the farmyard characters are interwoven with blackcurrant and stewed fruit, supported by very fine dry tannins and a lingering farmyard mint aftertaste. Cellar 3-4 years.
