There is a saying, which all art theorists fall back to and defendants of poor taste rely on and that is "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" The concept explains the huge diversity of opinion on all manner of subjective judgement. Some pundits will consider weight as the all important factor in a wine, others will seek out intensity of flavour. The 1995 and 1996 Wirra Wirra RSW Shiraz's are a pair of wines that will appeal to some and not to others. Frankly, we consider the wines to be overripe and in the case of the 1995, verging on being a dry vintage port style. The colour is exceptional - opaque crimson purple. The nose reveals a distinct jammy aroma, reminiscent of vintage port with hints of confectionary, vanilla, spice, very ripe plum, chocolate and liquorice. The palate has weight, but stops short - reaffirming the porty character of the wine. Fine grained, firmish tannins, with very ripe stewed fruit and liquorice flavour, followed by a warm alcohol finish - hardly suprising at 14.5% Alcohol Volume. Cellar 2-3 years.
