Wine Women & Song |
|

Wine Wo(Men) & Song is dedicated to Ladies and Gentlemen for the enjoyment of the really great things of life, music, art, literature, wine and friendship. For the first episode of this adventure, we have chosen images from great art that inspire the mind and thrill the senses. There exists some interaction between all the senses, yet precisely how they interact is difficult to define.
Great art, music and literature all satisfy the intellect and bring great joy to both the participant and observer. Couple this union of senses with the ultimate sensory experience of wine and you are on another plane. I hope this section does not offend anyone. It contains images of 12 of the best art works in civilization. There is a selection of wines recommended for each occasion that evoke the feelings expressed or generated by these images. The selection is very personal and it may well be that a different set of wines will inspire you more than those I have suggested. Those of you who are into studying heavy science will be aware of the notion of synaesthesia, where the customary boundaries between the senses begin to break down - sight mingling with sound, taste with touch, smell with colour and so on. Who really knows where the boundary lines are? All we ask is that you take time out to extend your own experience of these boundaries and observe where they take you to. I hope a great journey awaits you.
There are lots of Drinking Songs, in all cultures and whilst that aspect has been a part of the Wine Wo(Men) & Song tradition, as exposed by Bacchus and his rip roaring parties, our journey hopefully will take us beyond such lusty pleasures and leave you on a sensory plane that you may not have been to yet. However, we'll sum up our feelings with this drinking song.
Sum up all the delights this world doth produce, The darling allurements now chiefly in use, You'll find, if compared, there's none can contend, With the solid enjoyment of a bottle and friend.
For honour, and wealth, and beauty may waste, These joys often fade, and rarely do last, They're so hard to attain, and so easily lost, That the pleasure ne'er answers the trouble and cost.
None but wine and true friendships are lasting and sure, From jealousy free, and from envy secure, Then fill all the glasses until they run o'er, A friend and good wine are the charms we adore.
THE WORDS: Bernard Newsome is one of those eccentric customers that become part of a wine merchant's daily life. A retired academic, with a considerable amount of brain power remaining untapped, Newsome has turned his mind to mastering graphic design and the Apple Mac computer, as well as providing an endless stream of criticism and education to myself.
In this series of Wine Wo(Men) & Song, Newsome has made some beautiful observations and inspired us all to partake in another inspirational glass of wine. Art, literature and wine have become fused and elevated to a new sensual experience. We trust that you enjoy the new path of exploring the inter relationship of the senses.
