This is the high point of Ben Riggs' Journeys End Shiraz Collection, differentiated by the use of only the best barrels, longer barrel maturation times and fruit from lower cropping vines. The label is of particular interest in that it celebrates a turning point in Australia's early wine history. James Busby left Australia for a European tour in 1831 and is generally considered to be the first to return with Shiraz vines. The variety has since become a signature of Australian Wine's international success, thanks to the unwitting co-operation of the French. If they'd known that their wisdom, knowledge (as well as their Shiraz cuttings) were being placed at the feet of 'Barbarians', perhaps the French wouldn't have been so obliging. A remarkable twist of fate!

2006 was another outstanding vintage in McLaren Vale, particularly for Shiraz producing wines of great flavour concentration and depth. The wine was matured in a combination of predominantly new French and American oak for a period of approximately 18 months.

Was $39.99   Now  $24.99

Totally opaque inky black core with a very deep dark brick red black tinged hue. Nosing reveals intense aromatics of liquorice, dark plums and blackberries with spicy leather infusions followed by some earthy dark chocolate and vanillin cedar. Rich, full bodied, opulently textured and silky smooth the palate has developed some tertiary nuances adding complexity to the wine. Mouthfilling flavours of liquorice, dark plums and dark chocolate are overlaid with spicy leather characters and underpinned by some earthy vanillin cedar. Velvety tannins combine with a plush mouthfeel. Excellent power and concentration with a long aftertaste of dark plums, liquorice, dark chocolate, earthy vanillin cedar, leather and spice.
Drink over the next 12 months.
